When does mandatory SIL registration start?

1 July 2026. From this date, only providers registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission will be permitted to deliver Supported Independent Living supports.

What type of audit is required?

A Certification Audit conducted by an NDIS Commission-approved quality auditor. This is a comprehensive assessment of your policies, procedures, practices, and governance against all applicable NDIS Practice Standards modules.

How long does the registration process take?

Typically 6 to 12 months from start to approval, depending on the maturity of your existing governance and compliance systems. Providers starting now are on a tight but achievable timeline.

Do I need separate registration for each SIL location?

No. Registration covers the provider organisation, not individual sites. However, all locations must meet Practice Standards, and auditors may visit multiple sites during the audit process.

What if my registration application is still pending on 1 July?

Transitional arrangements are yet to be formally released. The NDIS Commission has indicated providers will have adequate time to prepare, but you should not rely on extensions. Assume you need to have commenced the registration process before the Commission's specified cut-off date.

Are platform providers also affected?

Yes. Online platform providers that connect participants with independent support workers must also register from 1 July 2026.
